In the Beginning:
Keystone SMILES Community Learning Center serves as a hub for National Service within Northwestern Pennsylvania. Keystone SMILES hosts the service of AmeriCorps members who are placed in community agencies and school districts to provide support programs which address community and educational needs. We are dedicated to strengthening communities and sharing resources to provide people of all ages an opportunity to put "learning into action" through the teaching methodology of service-learning. Service-learning can be defined as a teaching methodology in which students are involved in real-life settings where they apply academic knowledge and previous experience to meet real community needs.
Keystone SMILES AmeriCorps originated as a service-learning project in the Keystone School District in 1990 and became an AmeriCorps*State program in October 1994. It is considered one of the most innovative service-learning programs across the nation. SMILES believes in combining education with community service as a teaching methodology for all generations. Special emphasis has been placed on school readiness and school success initiatives. SMILES implements over 20 different programs addressing child development, at-risk youth, school support, service learning, fitness and recreation, human needs, environment, senior citizens and adult education.
